Key West Flyfishing
Most flyfishing is done when anchored over a reef or wreck, or drifting offshore. A good chum slick will draw in the predators for prime flycasting situations. We do catch fish on the fly when running and gunning offshore on diving birds, weed patches and flotsam and usually find Dorado. Occasionally a cruising Sailfish will present a good fly presentation opportunity.
Sharks on the Fly- The channels to the west of Key West are where many large sharks roam. Bulls, Lemons, Hammerheads, Blacktips, Spinners, Reef, Tigers..... A butterflied Barracuda or a Bluefish, Mackerel or Tuna makes the best chum for Sharks. We will anchor and start the chumming and wait to see the dark shape snaking its way towards the boat. When it reaches the proper casting distance cast slightly to either side and in front of the fish as the eyes are on the side of the head. Once hooked most will make a speedy run that gets way into the backing of a 12 wt. Then a tug of war......We release all sharks after a few photos.
